This 4-stroke class replaced the old 250cc category in 2011. Moto2 is aimed as a prestigious yet cost-effective accompaniment to the premier class of MotoGP. Honda are the sole engine suppliers. Dunlop provides the tyres.
Australia’s own Anthony West competes in this class.
The Moto3 class is the true junior category of the Moto GP World Championship.
A new format introduced for 2012 to replace the 2-stroke engine 125cc category. New regulations see 4-stroke 250cc engines introduced for teams with increased minimum weights for bikes and riders combined. The updated regulations introduce cost efficiencies for teams and highlight the category as a proving-ground for younger riders who aim to progress to the Moto2 class.
Formerly labeled ‘500cc’, the MotoGP championship underwent a change in 2002 with new technical regulations permitting the introduction of four-stroke machinery and increasing the engine capacity to 990cc, thus becoming MotoGP. From 2007, rules were again altered, limiting engine capacity to 800cc.
MotoGP is contested by three manufacturers: Ducati, Yamaha, and Honda. Bridgestone is the sole tyre supplier.
2012 also see’s the introduction of the Claiming Rule Team (CRT) swelling the MotoGP entries with 9 extra bikes and teams. They will use modified production engines from Honda, Kawasaki, Aprilia and BMW.
