After a superb 2015, 2016 was an 'annus horribilis' for the Oxford rider who was consistently upstaged by his teammate (Pol Espargaro), and he then suffered a serious knee injury in practice for the final round of the 2016 world endurance title after being knocked off by a slower rider in practice and then hit by another bike – whose fork leg went through the back of his right knee. He sat out four MotoGP™ races after that and returned to action in Japan. The knee still isn't 100 per cent, while the pre-season has also been spent coming to grips with the new KTM as the Austrian factory makes its first foray into the premier class. 2015 was a superb year for Smith as he scored points in all 18 GPs (only Valentino Rossi was his equal on that stat) and also won the Suzuka 8-Hour world endurance race alongside Espargaro and Japan's Katsuyuki Nakasuga.
