Spanish sensation Maverick Vinales burst on to the 125cc grand prix scene in 2011 with three pole positions, nine podiums and four race wins in his rookie year. After winning the Moto3™ World Championship in 2013, he repeated his Rookie of the Year success in the Moto2™ category, again with four wins and nine podiums to finish third overall, before making the switch to the premier class with the newly reformed factory Suzuki squad in just his fifth season of Grand Prix racing.
He scored points in all of the 16 Grands Prix he finished, again earning coveted Rookie of the Year status in 2015 with the Japanese team, before picking up four podiums and his maiden MotoGP™ victory the following year. It was the first win for the Suzuki factory since Australian Chris Vermeulen took out the rain-affected French Grand Prix 10 seasons earlier.
With a new contract with Movistar Yamaha alongside Valentino Rossi for 2017, Vinales was quick to adapt, topping every pre-season test and winning the opening two Grands Prix from pole position. He finished third overall in his debut season and, despite signing a new deal through to the end of 2020, had struggled with the 2018 bike, most notably in the early stages of the race.
After dominating the field at Phillip Island in 2018, the Spaniard will be looking to bring his strong form back to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in 2019, hoping his Yamaha GP19 will be able to keep up with the pack.
