Remy Gardner clings to Moto2™ Championship lead

Monday, 17 May 2021

The Aussie’s excellent season continues.

Australia’s Remy Gardner holds onto the Moto2™ World Championship lead after a gutsy performance that saw him back on the podium on Sunday.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider finished in second place at the French GP after finishing fourth at the Spanish GP two weeks ago.

His solid start to the season has seen him remain on top of the standings, with one point separating him from teammate Raul Fernandez.

Gardner had a close call at the start of the race after contact with Xavi Vierge (Petronas Sprinta Racing). Fortunately, Gardner was able to recover.

Fernandez went on to win the race, with Gardner moving into second place on lap 19 when Marco Bezzecchi (SKY Racing Team VR46) ran wide.

“I am very happy with the race we had today. Our position on the grid reduced our chances of being able to fight for victory. Even so, I am satisfied with the work we did, since at the end of the contest we were able to get closer to Raul [Fernandez],” Gardner said.

“This is important for me, as we also took a good amount of points. I’m already looking forward to the next round, and to continue working together with the team. Finally, I want to congratulate my teammate on his win.”

Moto2™ returns to action in two weeks for the Italian GP in Mugello, Italy, 28-30 May 2021.
