Top five: Phillip Island epic Moments

From Casey Stoner’s coronation as “King of the Island” to unforgettable last-lap heroics, Phillip Island has long delivered some of the most extraordinary and unforgettable moments in MotoGP history.

It’s a circuit where something remarkable seems to happen every year - whether it’s record-breaking speed, edge-of-the-seat battles or moments of pure theatre. As former MotoGP race winner Chris Vermeulen puts it, “Phillip Island consistently produces some of the closest finishes and most spectacular racing the sport has ever seen”. 

Here are five iconic moments we think have defined a generation of MotoGP racing at Phillip Island.

5. 2013 – Lorenzo’s Record Lap… with a Twist

Jorge Lorenzo’s 2013 qualifying lap is one of the most unusual records in MotoGP history.

After the circuit was resurfaced, lap times tumbled - but Lorenzo’s effort stood out for more than just speed. Mid-lap, he struck a seagull yet still went on to break the lap record at breathtaking pace. 

Incredibly, once the bike was cleared, he went even faster. It remains one of Phillip Island’s most surreal feats - proof of both the circuit’s speed and the elite control of MotoGP riders at full throttle.

4. 2011 – Stoner’s Perfect Day

If there’s ever been a fairytale finish in MotoGP™, this was it. Casey Stoner’s 2011 victory is the ultimate homecoming story.

On his 26th birthday, the Australian sealed the MotoGP World Championship by winning at Phillip Island - his home Grand Prix. 

Everything aligned: the form, the occasion, the crowd and the milestone. It was Stoner’s fifth win at the circuit and the perfect script for a rider who made Phillip Island his own.

There is no Phillip Island story without Casey Stoner.

3. 1989 – Gardner Ignites a Nation

The first-ever premier class race at Phillip Island needed a moment of national significance.

Wayne Gardner, Australia’s first 500cc World Champion, carried the weight of expectation of a nation into the inaugural event - and he delivered!

In front of a massive home crowd, Gardner took victory in a performance that helped cement the circuit’s place on the global stage. The iconic image of his partner running down the pit straight to celebrate has become one of Australia’s great sporting moments.

Gardner’s victory wasn’t just a race win. It helped establish Phillip Island as a permanent fixture on the MotoGP™ calendar and sparked a generation of Australian fans and riders and is remembered as a defining day, both for the sport and the circuit.

2. 2022 – Rins Wins the Battle Royale

Few races in MotoGP history have been as competitive as Phillip Island 2022.

Alex Rins produced a stunning ride to win one of the tightest races in recent memory. Seven riders. Separated by less than a second. After 27 laps.

No one backed off. No one played it safe.

Starting from the fourth row, Rins thrived in the chaos - demonstrating his ability to race in the pack and seize critical moments. The result was made even more emotional given Suzuki’s impending departure from the sport.

A modern day classic that captured everything Phillip Island stands for.

1. 2006 – Melandri’s Iconic Slide

There are race wins. Then there are moments that live forever. Marco Melandri’s victory in 2006 delivered both.

In a chaotic race shaped by changing conditions and mid-race bike swaps, Melandri took control and pulled clear to secure the win ahead of Chris Vermeulen and Valentino Rossi.

But it wasn’t just the result. It was the finish.

Coming through the final corner, Melandri threw the bike sideways in a controlled power slide and raised a peace sign as he crossed the line.

Stylish. Audacious. Completely unforgettable.

That moment didn’t just win the race. It defined it.

Honourable mentions only reinforce the point: Valentino Rossi’s surprise 2014-win, Casey Stoner’s final MotoGP victory in 2012, and Australian podium appearances across classes.
