Barcelona awaits: Can anyone challenge Marquez's historic run?

Friday, 5 September 2025

Round 15 of the MotoGP season arrives at the iconic Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a venue steeped in racing history.

After a trip to the new Balaton Park circuit, the paddock returns to a familiar and demanding track. The central question looming over the weekend is whether anyone can halt the seemingly unstoppable momentum of Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team), who returns to his home Grand Prix with a commanding lead in the championship.

The #93 is on a tear, having secured seven consecutive Grand Prix and Sprint wins. This incredible streak has propelled him to a massive 175-point lead over his brother, Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP). A strong performance in Barcelona could set Marc up to clinch the title in Misano, an astonishing feat given his journey back to the top of the sport. Despite his recent domination, Barcelona has proven to be a tricky track for Marquez in the past; his last victory here was in 2019. This historical anomaly, coupled with the pressure of a home race, provides a sliver of hope for his rivals. Alex Marquez, currently second in the standings, is looking to end his podium drought, which dates back to Germany, and make a statement on home soil.

The battle for the podium positions is heating up, with a fierce contest for third place. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), the most recent winner at this circuit with a double victory last year, is facing immense pressure. The former champion has not been on the podium since Germany and is now being challenged by Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing). Bezzecchi, a consistent threat since Assen, has been on the podium in all but one Grand Prix since, and a mere 31 points separate him from Bagnaia with eight rounds remaining. Another Aprilia rider, Jorge Martin, is also a one to watch. The 2024 title winner is returning to the track where he sealed his championship, fresh off a stellar ride from P16 to P4 in Hungary.

KTM is enjoying a significant resurgence, led by rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). The young Spaniard has secured four podium finishes across the last three Sprints and Grands Prix, lifting him to fifth overall in the standings. His teammate, Brad Binder, has also shown improved form, consistently placing inside the top eight. The Austrian manufacturer's gains are attributed to front-end improvements on the RC16. Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech 3), who has found his rhythm with the bike, is also a regular in the top-ten fight.

The fight for sixth place in the championship is also intensifying. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) has fallen to P7 after a difficult race in Hungary, with his teammate Franco Morbidelli now ahead of him. "Diggia" finished sixth in the Catalan GP last year, while Morbidelli has a pole position to his name from 2020. Trailing just 28 points behind Di Giannantonio is Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP), who is eager to close the gap after a challenging race in Hungary.

Several riders with a history of strong performances at Barcelona are hoping to find their form. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), currently tenth in the standings, has fond memories of the track, including his first MotoGP win here in 2020. Similarly, Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) has two podiums to his name at the circuit, and Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) led the Sprint last year before a crash. All three are hungry to prove their worth. Honda riders Luca Marini and Joan Mir are also looking for a good result, with Marini coming off his best finish with the manufacturer and Mir returning to the site of his last top-four result in 2022.

With the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya's unique characteristics, including its notoriously low grip, the weekend promises to be a spectacular display of skill and strategy. The stage is set for a dramatic showdown as the championship battle intensifies in the final stretch of the season.
