Australian MotoGP™ records the biggest crowd in 10 years

It was the largest crowd since 2012.

An estimated attendance of more than 91,000 people made the pilgrimage back to Phillip Island, for the first Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix since 2019.

It was the largest crowd since two-time MotoGP™ World Champion Casey Stoner last raced on home soil back in 2012.

Friday recorded an estimated attendance of 20,150, Saturday was 30,811, while Sunday recorded a huge 40,197 people – bringing the total to 91,158 across the three days.

Team Suzuki Ecstar’s, Álex Rins, took the top spot on the podium, alongside Marc Márquez in second place and Francesco Bagnaia in third.

Australian Jack Miller retired after a crash with Álex Márquez at the newly-named Miller Corner (Turn 4), while fellow Aussie, Remy Gardner, finished 15th.

In Moto2™, Alonso Lopez took home the silverware - earlier in the day Izan Guevara was crowned Moto3™ World Champion and Australian Joel Kelso finished 8th in the race.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said: “Victoria is renowned as the sporting and events capital of our nation and the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island is the jewel in the crown among regional attractions.”

“I would like to congratulate the Australian Grand Prix Corporation on a successful event and thank the fans who provide a real boost for business across the Bass Coast region.”

Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO, Andrew Westacott was delighted with the attendance.

“We’re proud to be back here at Phillip Island and delighted to see smiling faces around the circuit, over what was an incredible three-day event,” said Westacott.

“I would like to thank the fans, riders and teams for making the Animoca Brands Motorcycle Grand Prix 2022 a resounding success – we can’t wait to be back in 2023.”

“This year’s crowd was the biggest since Casey Stoner’s final Australian race in 2012 and is a huge boost of confidence for Victorian regional tourism.”
