Ai Ogura isn’t going to blow you away with a headline lap time, hog the social media headlines for something he says or does, or make himself the centre of attention for anything other than his riding. For one of MotoGP’s renowned talent-spotters, it’s a recipe that can lead to something bigger.

Ogura wasn’t the most logical choice when Davide Brivio needed a replacement for Miguel Oliveira at Aprilia’s second team, but Brivio saw enough in the Japanese’s title-winning Moto2 season to think his trademark tenacity and resilience will translate well to the bigger bikes and the top level.

As the first graduate of the Asia Talent Cup to make it to MotoGP, Ogura’s signature – in lieu of more obvious, nationalistic alternatives for the American-owned team like Californian Joe Roberts – showed the trust Trackhouse has placed in Brivio, and sets Ogura up nicely to become the best rookie of 2025.
