Right rider, right time? There’s an argument that Luca Marini is just what Repsol Honda needs right now, the sport’s former powerhouse in an unprecedented rut, and needing time and a release of pressure to cure its ills. Marini has the former, and won’t ramp up the latter.
With Marc Marquez leaving Repsol after a decade, Marini filled the breach after three years at Ducati where he produced flashes of speed, showed a cool head and gained a reputation as one of the most analytical minds on the grid.
It’s a savvy long-term play for a rider who was never going to be a priority for a factory with names like Bagnaia, Martin, Bezzecchi – and now, Marquez – riding four of its eight bikes. While Marini may not be around longer-term for reap the benefits of any Honda resurgence, he’s likely to have his fingerprints all over the Japanese manufacturer’s revival.
