Luca Marini’s 2024 featured career-worsts in points (14) and championship position (22nd, last of the regulars on the grid). But it’s another number – four – that explains what the Italian is about, and why he’s so important to Honda’s rebound from rock-bottom.

Marini’s four crashes for the entire season were comfortably the fewest on the grid, and speaks to his ability to find a bike’s limit and accept that methodically without overreaching to break bones and batter confidence. Marini stayed onboard and downloaded as much data as he could to Honda’s engineers, with his debriefs – in his second language, remember – telling for their clarity, honesty and depth.

The 27-year-old is fast enough to have poles and podiums on his CV from his Ducati days, but dragging Honda towards the front in 2025 might be just as satisfying for a rider who knows his strengths, and embraces them for the greater good.
