Fortunately for the ever-smiling Chantra and the massive fan base in the country that opened the season for the first time, the debutant’s attitude and approach are without question. Where his ultimate pace ceiling lies will be harder to define, and the 26-year-old’s biggest challenge might be finding where the limit is while not going over it, which – on a Honda – represents a learning curve that’s near-vertical.
Life – on track and off – is rarely dull when the effervescent Chantra is around, and his popularity and presence will be welcomed wherever MotoGP’s travelling roadshow goes. Ultimately, the stopwatch – not just his commercial appeal – will determine how long he stays.
