There’s plenty of Aussies who wish Phillip Island could host more than one world championship race per year, but none more than Joel Kelso. Because when the lights burn brightest – or rain hits hardest – at the Island, Kelso steps up.
The high-point of Kelso’s first full-time campaign in 2022 was a fighting eighth at home, but that was nothing compared to last year. With a 2024 contract in his pocket with BOE Motorsports, Kelso qualified his CFMOTO machine in an equal career-best second before splashing to a maiden podium. “Bloody brilliant!” was his economically-worded reaction after finishing third.
Kelso caught the eye at tracks other than his home one, too; he qualified inside the top 10 nine times, regularly exceeding the limitations of his machinery over one lap. BOE Motorsports had David Munoz regularly in the podium mix last year, so Kelso has the ideal teammate to benchmark his pace.
